Comet
Forever in our hearts
Being a volunteer foster with Golden Retriever Rescue of Michigan, I have seen dogs come and go but one in particular remains dear to my heart. I was contacted in January 2014 to see if I would foster a senior male that was picked up by animal control and was being held in a shelter. Being a sucker for shelter dogs, I said "of course" and made arrangements to pick him up.
The shelter named him Comet and although he was a tall male, he only weighed about 65 pounds, telling me that he had been on the streets for some time. When we got him home we noticed that he had many lumps on him. While at the vet for his wellness check, it was determined that some were malignant. The vet referred us to an oncologist that confirmed that Comet had cancer that had spread throughout his lymph node system. Given his advanced age, he was not a viable candidate for chemo, and I summized that this is probably why his original family abandoned him.
With this condition, Comet could not go on the adoption roster and I was faced with either keeping him or surrendering him to another foster. Comet made that decision for me on the ride home from the oncologist when he leaned forward from the back seat and rested his head on my shoulder.Through rear view mirror his eyes said "please don't you give up on me too." In October Comet was also diagnosed with bone cancer.
His attitude never changed but by February 2015 you could tell that the pain was getting too severe and the final decision was made
