Fenway
Forever in our hearts
I met Fenway's dad in June 2012, and Fenway quickly became my baby, as well. I'd never had a golden retriever before, and was amazed at how gentle, smart and loving he was. I had two cats which he respected and protected. I could leave the cat's food out and he wouldn't go near it. So smart, so good! My cats had never been around a dog before, but they acclimated so well because of his gentle nature. Fenway loved to swim, he even taught some local pups how to swim, how to catch the ball in the water and would even go get the ball for them if it went out too far and give it to them as if to say "we'll pretend you got it."
Fenway's eyes seemed to be giving him trouble, and he was sent to an optimologist. She took one look into his eyes and said, "I'm very certain he has cancer." He showed no other signs, only what appeared to be blurred eyesight. Her diagnosis was confirmed, Fenway had lymphoma. He was just 6 years old. He quickly went into remission after two sessions of chemo, but 8 months in, he had had enough. The cancer quickly returned and our beautiful boy lost his fight. The world was blessed with this special dog for only 7 years.
I learned about the GRLS when doing research about Fenway's cancer, and when we adopted our golden Oakley 3 months after Fenway passed, I enrolled him right away. Oakley is hero #1986. We're very grateful for this study, as no one should experience the heartbreak of losing a pet to this awful disease.
